Carp fishing
at night

Night fishing for carp is authorized on specific routes defined by prefectoral decree. In Sumène Artense, there are two specific areas for night carp fishing: at Lac de Lastioulles and along the bank between Château de Val and Plage de la Siauve on Lac de Bort-les-Orgues.

When to fish?

The closed seasons correspond to the reproduction periods of various fish species. In order to preserve fish stocks, it is strictly forbidden to fish outside these periods. Fishing is permitted from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.

For opening and closing times, visit the Cantal fishing federation website.

Beware of
hydroelectricity!

The lakes and waterways of Sumène Artense depend on the operation of hydroelectric power plants. Water releases can occur at any time, automatically and even in good weather. Access to the riverbeds is not recommended throughout the area. Access, fishing, and boating are prohibited in the vicinity of all types of structures related to hydroelectric power plants (plants, dams, dikes, water pipes, spillways, etc.).

Can I
harvest fish?

Harvesting is possible, but quotas and legal catch sizes, also known as mesh sizes, must be respected. These rules make it possible to limit the number of fish taken to ensure the renewal of the fish fauna.

In Sumène Artense, the reverse mesh is applied on Lac du Tact, where pike cannot be caught below 60 cm and above 80 cm.

Crayfish
fishing

Present in large numbers in the waterways of Sumène Artense, signal crayfish, California crayfish, and American crayfish are considered undesirable in our rivers.

Fishing for them is permitted throughout the open season in first-category waters and year-round in second-category waters. A minimum mesh size of 10 mm is required. A fishing license is mandatory. They must never be released or transported alive.

Native crayfish (white-clawed crayfish) have now virtually disappeared from our rivers. They are protected species; harvesting them is prohibited!

No kill
in Sumène Artense

No-kill is a fishing technique that consists of never killing a caught fish.

No-kill fishing areas are zones where all fish, regardless of species, must be released back into the water:

The Lastioulles weir
The Sumène River: from the Vendes bridge (Bassignac) to the Marilhou factory
1,300 meters from the Mars River

Species that are strictly prohibited from being taken within the territory:

The introduced black bass in the Crégut pond
The introduced grayling in the Rhue River
