Saint John the Baptist Church

Le Monteil

Opening period

All year round daily.

Description

Until 1903, the hamlet of Chastel-Marlhac was the parish seat and the administrative center of the commune. Finding the parish church a bit far, the residents of Monteil and the surrounding area suggested building another church.
A notarial deed from 1868 states that the people of Monteil and the surrounding hamlets must, if they wish, pay the sum of 15,000 francs for the construction of a church. The building was constructed and completed in 1874.

The interior of the Saint John the Baptist Church in Le Monteil has a Latin cross layout with a nave and a chancel vaulted with brick ribbing. The capitals are decorated with carved plant motifs, in a simple 19th-century style.

The church also preserves several catalogued liturgical objects: statues of saints, a chalice, a paten, monstrances, and religious vestments, reflecting parish life and the richness of its furnishings.

Visiting and access: self-guided visits are possible, keys can be picked up at the Monteil town hall: 04 71 40 64 02.
